IEW Boot Camp

2023 Sessions: May 16, 18, 23, 25 or August TBD

Class 1—Unit 1: Note Making and Outlines and Unit 2: Writing from Notes

Class 2—Unit 3: Retelling Narrative Stories

Class 3—Unit 4: Summarizing a Reference

Class 4—Unit 7: Inventive Writing

  • This is a four-day program to instruct students in five IEW units with Structure and Style. This program will not take the place of a year-long course or provide credits toward English. Because I teach the program at an accelerated pace, it is not indicative of the way IEW should be taught over the course of the year. However, this is a great way to review material or provide a sample of what IEW is like.

This is a Level B class with all source texts provided.

  • This is a terrific class for students new to IEW to give them a foretaste of what the full program is like. Parents, if your students attend traditional school programs, this is a great opportunity to fill their toolbox with writing skills they can use when they return to school. Students who have used IEW either at home or in a co-op will find the review of concepts useful before returning to a new year of IEW writing.

If your student can focus to sit through a ninety-minute class with interaction and stay on topic, this is a great fit for your student. If you have a younger student or one who struggles with focus, please plan on attending with your student. This boot camp will cover a lot of information in a short amount of time.

  • Classes meet twice a week for 90 minutes a class over the course of two weeks using the Zoom platform. Students should have access to a computer to use in a quiet location. I strongly recommend a headset with a microphone.

Students will work on the first part of the lesson in class. I will cover IEW’s Structure and Style.

All sources are provided with the class. There is nothing additional to purchase. Assignments involve completing the writing and practicing adding the style elements, as well as editing. Your student’s work is submitted via Google Classroom and will be evaluated by the instructor. Checklists for the assignments are provided.

Classes will be recorded and available for students who miss a class day or who want to watch again. The recordings for a particular session are available for up to one week after the final class. Assignments will be accepted up to one week after the final class.

  • • Four 90-minute classes (two classes for two consecutive weeks)

    • Class size limited to 10-12 students

    • All source material provided.

    • Level B instruction (appropriate for 5th-9th grade; Older students are welcome, but the instruction is targeted for a 5th – 9th grade student.)

    • Feedback from an IEW Accredited Instructor at the Certified Instructor level

    • $100, paid before the first class directly to the instructor (PayPal or Venmo)

    • Fees are fully refundable up to the day before class begins. At that point, fees are refundable at 50% up until the second class meets, regardless of whether a student attends or not.

    • Cancellations by the instructor will include rescheduling the class. I will offer prorated fees for classes the instructor does not reschedule.
